How The Stone Rocker Works

Built for people who'd rather hold the knife themselves.

You set the angle. You hold the blade. The stone glides linearly beneath. The geometry stays locked while you stay in control of every stroke.

This is how it works — from setup to finished edge.

The Four Steps

1 Mount your stone

The Stone Rocker fits most standard 6"×1" sharpening stones — waterstones, oilstones, diamond plates, ceramic. Snap your stone onto the carriage. If you already collect stones, most of yours will fit. If you don't, our PDT Diamond Stone Kit is matched to the system.

2 Set the dual angle guides

Each side is independent. Dial in your angle once and the geometry stays locked for as long as you sharpen. Want an asymmetric grind on a Japanese knife? Set each side independently. The Stone Rocker is built for serious sharpening choices — not preset compromises.

3 Tune the motion to your touch

Open the controller and dial in forward speed, return speed, acceleration, deceleration, and pause between strokes. The Stone Rocker adapts to your style. Not the other way around.

4 Hold and slide

Rest the blade against the angle guide. Slide the knife heel-to-tip as the stone glides beneath. You stay in full control of pressure, feel, and rhythm. The motor handles the consistency. The guide holds the geometry. You handle the edge.

When you're ready to flip — flip. When you're ready to switch grit — switch. No clamps to release. No setup to redo.

Why "Stone Moves, Not Knife" Matters

Every other motorized sharpener moves the knife, clamps the knife, or grinds against the knife. The knife is the precious thing — the $200 chef knife, the heirloom hunting blade, the custom-forged kitchen knife you can't replace.

So we built the only system where the stone does the moving. The stone is cheap. The stone is replaceable. The stone doesn't care.

You stay in control of the blade. The motor stays in control of consistency. The geometry stays locked. The temper stays untouched.

Edge Leading or Edge Trailing — Your Call

Edge leading strokes — aggressive metal removal, fast reprofiling, burr-forming.

Edge trailing strokes — clean finishing, burr removal, polished refinement.

The Stone Rocker is one of the only motorized systems that supports both. Most belt sharpeners only do edge leading. Most pull-throughs only do edge trailing. We don't choose for you.

Why No Heat Damage

Belt grinders and high-speed wheels generate friction heat. That heat travels up the blade and destroys the temper — the careful heat treatment that gives your steel its hardness and edge retention. Once the temper is cooked, the blade is permanently degraded.

The Stone Rocker uses linear stone motion at controlled speeds with wet or oil stones. The blade stays cool. The temper stays intact. Your knife stays the knife you bought.

Safe on:

  • High-carbon steels (Japanese kitchen, traditional carbon)
  • Powder metallurgy steels (S30V, M390, Maxamet, etc.)
  • Stainless premium steels (VG-10, AUS-10, SG-2)
  • Damascus, layered, and pattern-welded steels

Who This Is For

  • Serious home cooks with $200-$800 chef knives they're not willing to risk
  • Knife collectors who refuse to scratch their spines in clamps
  • Bladesmiths and knife makers sharpening their own work
  • Outdoor enthusiasts with hunting, fishing, or EDC knives worth preserving
  • Sharpening hobbyists who already have stones and want consistent motorized assist

Who This Isn't For

  • People who just want a $30 pull-through for a $40 kitchen knife
  • People who want fully automated "push button, walk away" sharpening
  • People who've never sharpened before and want a beginner trainer

We're honest about that. The Stone Rocker is built for people who care.

Built and Tested in Canada

Every Stone Rocker is hand-assembled, hand-tested, and shipped one at a time from our Calgary workshop. Each unit gets a final sharpening test on a real knife before it leaves the bench. If it doesn't pass, it doesn't ship.

This isn't factory-stamped hardware. It's craftsman-built equipment.
